Alex Hansen is in his first year working as the Assistant Coach at Colorado under Head Coach Andy Partee. He plays a vital role for his team, providing leadership in multiple facets of the program. Alex has also made a name for himself working and recruiting multiple camps and events across the country.
“Every day that Alex was with us he made a positive impact on our program and our student-athletes. I have no doubt that he'll be an outstanding head coach, and his array of experiences with different programs, all over the country, will have him very well prepared when his opportunity comes”
-Patrick Doherty, Head Coach, Haverford Men’s Basketball
I spoke with Alex about his experiences as an assistant and his coaching journey, asking him what he loves about being at Colorado College:
“There are two main things that I love about CC. The first is the commitment to being competitive at the national level athletically. Our Athletic Director Lesley Irvine talks a lot about building a championship culture throughout our athletic department, and I love that ambitious nature. We are lucky that the school itself takes athletics seriously and is willing to invest in the resources to make that possible. Secondly I love that CC is committed to letting each student learn as much from hands on experience as possible. The way the block plan is set up you can take field trips, and spend more time doing practical applications of skills rather than just talking about it.”
Every assistant has their favorite memory throughout their career thus far, so I asked Alex what his was...
“I honestly love when you see something click in a player on the court. You've been trying to teach them a new skill or to build a new habit and then it translates to a game and works. And you can just see the lightbulb turn on. Winning games against ranked teams is fun too.”
Most importantly, Alex is one of hundreds of assistants at the Division III level working countless hours to improve their programs without the notoriety that the other divisions receive. So I asked, “WHY D3?”
“I love that D3 truly encourages student athletes to become well rounded individuals. Sports can teach you so much about life, from teamwork to perseverance to problem solving. D3 lets you combine all of that plus the ability to explore different academic subjects that you're interested in, or to study abroad, which you're not always able to do and other levels.”
